Theorist Research and what we are incorperating

Goodwin's idea is that a video has three strands:
  1. Visuals
  2. Lyrics
  3. Music
Messages are portrayed through the strands, they can illustrate, amplify or contradict each other. We feel that our video should illustrate the lyrics of our song and amplify our music. We aim to do this by filming the exact events that our mentioned in the lyrics and using a random and colourful video to relate to the mood of the song.

Dyer's theory is that the star is just an image that has been invented in order to make money and fit into the market - the real person is separate from the image being portrayed. However, we have decided to avoid this theory in our piece because we want to create an artist that our audience would be able to connect with on a personal level.
Dyer also believes that stars can represent a shared culture and convey their beliefs to enhance their star quality. We have chosen to incorporate this part of the theory but on a lower and more subtle level as we do feel that there is meaning behind the lyrics. For example, "the boy has lost his marbles, found them down the drain, the sticks to thin to get them so he will have to start again".

Voyeurism is a common theme in music videos and numerous theorists take this into account. Voyeurism is the idea of watching someone without them knowing, often used in a sense that the audience is watching the artist so there seeing them as they are. This can be reversed so the artist is watching other people and there songs is the commenting on what there seeing. We have decided to facilitate a voyeuristic response from our audience through the use both ideas. The reason that we are is so that the audience can connect with the artist and we want her to see relatable and she appears to be a 'normal' person. We are having the artist watch other people as a way for us to illustrate the lyrics.

Exhibitionism is argued by Laura Mulvey's as a way to show that men are incharge. Provocative videos show women are used as objects rather than a person in control. However, other women have argued that women use exhibition as a way of controlling their male audience. Siegmund Freud's idea is that sexual desire is the biggest motivation to humans.
Although we will be exhibiting our artist in the sense that we will be creating a wardrobe for her to portray her as bright, stand out and individual, we will not be exhibiting her in sexual way.

Music Video Analysis

50 Cent - Window Shopper - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFLow5StvvU&ob=av2

The music video shows 50 cent in Monaco, there is no particular storyline, but we are aware that the purpose of the video is to show how good his life is, in terms of possessions, wealth, women and social life. The title of the song is 'window shopper' and the lyrics tells us that 'window shopper' is a reference to all these people who can only want cars, jewellery and women but never have them unlike 50 cent. The genre of this video would be RnB and Hip Hop. And the audience would be early teens to mid 30's. The conventions of the video are typical of RnB/Hip Hop as it shows attractive women, flashy cars, bling and parties. The video begins with 50 cent in a shop trying to buy shoes off a french man, we can tell by this that shoes are his signature thing and they feature throughout the video with some being personalised to him. It then goes into wide shots of what seems to be his expensive car driving through Monaco, the camera tracks across the town to the beaches so we can see the wealth of the area that he is in.
The video links to his film 'Get rich or die tryin' as it is in the soundtrack. There is constantly a reference to money and this is to do with the film 'Get rich or die tryin', this could have negative connotations as it could be suggesting that in order for people to have that amount of money they would need to turn to crime which is referred to in the song 'So I don't cruise to nobody's hood without my gun'. However the general purpose of showing his wealth is to create an idolistic image of himself in order to say, 'you want to be me'. Throughout the video we see him with women and his 'gang' which shows his popularity, and he is always wearing designer jeans, sunglasses and expensive trainers which again reinforces his wealthy image. With everything he buys a label comes up with the items price which again shows how much money he has to spend, and he links power with money when he buys a girl some jewellery and she kisses him, showing that the money gained her affections.

The video can link to Laura Mulvey's Theory who believes women are often used for display purposes only and males have a powerful controlling gaze at the females on display. Overall, I feel the purpose of the video is to create 50 cent as an idol to many fans and the video is for both females and males, as females see his sex appeal and wealth and males admire the amount he has and idol his control over having women and expensive things. The artists image in this video is completely different from our artist's but if we were going to take anything from this video that we could use in ours, it would possibly be the camera angles. Location is a big feature in the video as it is in ours and they use wide shots and panning in order to show this, we could also do this to show off our location.

Audience profile

I have looked at several artists that have a similar image, sound or influence on our artist (Jose vanders) . I have looked at some of the positive comments about their songs from their videos on YouTube and noted the ages of the people leaving comments.I then worked out the average age of the audience. (this is not a  100% accurate way of recording average ages as younger audience may not be allowed to watch or comment on you tube videos, also people may view the video and not leave a comment)

Vanessa Carlton 'a thousand miles' - I decided to note the audience age for this video as she uses the piano as a main part of her video, and we are considering this for our video. The range of ages on this video was 28-14=12. From the comments i got some information as to why she is popular , one of the comments commented on her innocent look, and not trying to be over sexy.

Polly paulusma 'fingers and thumbs' - i chose to do research on this artist, as our artist found her  one of her infulences,  the range was 51-20 = 31. ( this was only the song, not the video but it helped to find who liked her as an artist )

Regina spector 'fidelity' - this was also another infulece on our artists music,  i found the range was 34-18= 16.

Music Video Analysis- Kate Nash

Kate Nash - Foundations

Uses the beats at the beginning to switch between clips.

The clips show some of the different objects used later in the video to help illustrate the lyrics. This is known as form of for shadowing.
The tooth brushes represent the male and female in this relationship. The composition of the objects in the clip symbolise the status of their relationship at this stage of the story. They are together and facing the same way so they are getting along but they are not close, not facing each other. This is one of the many content signs that there is a seperation between the couple.

This shot shows another set of objects that will be later used to help illustrate the lyrics. It is, again, using 'his and her' objects, the same product but a male and female design, to represent the male and female characters in the story. They show the relationship to be more seperated. The majority of the objects in this shot is also archetypically female's. The design of the phone and the colour of the quilt cover.
This shot of someone using the shoes as bowling pins is very random and is the first sign in this video that shows Kate Nash to be very crazy, out there and random. It is also the first clip with yellow, from this clip on there is a lot of yellow that is used in Kate Nash's wardrobe and sympolises her to be very bright, up beat, and makes her stand out. It contrasts greatly to the male lead who wears very dull colours. His costum design also symbolises how he feels about the relationship they are in, mainly bored. This close up shot emphasises hi bordom as it shows his facial expression and the look in his eyes. It is obvious that he is looking her in the eye but it appears that he is trying to tell her he doesn't like being with her or hearing her "story".It becomes clear very early on that there are no two shots with the male and female leads in. There are only one shots, this shows that there is a barrier between them, they are protrayed as seperate. This over the shoulder shot is very interesting as Kate always sings to the audience, although the lyrics are directed at the male. This suggests that although Kate has felt like this for a while and they act it our toward each other, they never acutally talk to each other about it.
This is the first two shot used in 'foundations' music video. The costum contrasts greatly as I had before mentioned and  it shows that it was the male lead that was bowling with the shoes as the shoes he is wearing are the ones that were in the background. This tells the audience that he deliberatly messes up her stuff to annoy her and it links in with what she does to his later on in the video. the table leg acts as a metaphore. Although it is a table leg and is used to keep the table stable, it also signifies the barrier between them in their relationship. This shot also shows that there is a distance between them, as he puts his feet up on the plank under the table she takes hers down. Once again the furniture shows that the house they are living in is more hers than his as the chair he is sat on is yellow and this video shows yellow to be her colour. This shot protrays Kate to be very random (linking her to the image we want for our artist) as when she say "embaress me infront of our friends" she looks at the fish in the bowl as if they are their friends. This implies to the audience that as a couple they don't share any freinds, they don't get along with the same type of people. Emphasising that they are not meant to be toghether.
The video is used to illustrate the lyrics very well in this shot. as there are so many beers in the fridge it is apparent that they have sarcastic arguments frequently. Kate's face in this shot also emphasises her sarcasm due to the expression on her face. This conveys to the audience that what they say to each other aren't just words said when they are angry, they truely mean it. Just before this shot (in the same take) we can see some of the utensils in the kitchen that keep with the same idea that most of the stuff in the house are hers. For example, the pans are a very brightly coloured and a grily shade of green.
This shot has nothing to do with the lyrics, she is simply making his mess of beer bottles beautiful by adding a flower. This sybolises, again, their relationship. It is dirty and not what any one would want to find - symbolised through the beer bottles. The flower represents her trying to make it appear to be okay so that she doesn't have to leave him. The large number of beer bottles also shows that he is drunk which links with the lyrics that are sung during the next shot when he gets mad and swears at her - something that is known to happen in a bad relationship while one is drunk.
This shot being under the table links with Sigmund Freud’s Theory of voyeurism. They are watching what is going on without the artist knowing that they are there. It gives them a sense of ‘behind the scenes’. It could also be a symbolism for what it could be like in the future if they stayed together. The audience could make the link of an adult be angry and fighting with a child hiding under the table – if they were to stay together and have a child then this is the kind of life they would be given them.
This footage of Kate Nash kicking over a neatly stacked pile of skateboards links with the second shot in the video of the male lead knocking over all her neatly lined up shoes. They mess each others things up for fun. Although Kate kicks over his skateboards when singing about him swearing at her so this also gives the audience the idea that he doesn’t want her or care about her but she is trying her best to keep it together. She only knocks over his stuff when she is mad whereas he does it for fun. The lyrics in this part of the song are also blanked out for “bitch” which shoes Kate Nash to be someone against swearing and makes her music suitable for the younger generation. I think this is a good image to have.
This shot is very random again, using dinosaurs instead of people as “friends”. This once again builds on the idea that they do not have any mutual friends.
It also foreshadows some of the later takes of the inanimate objects used to signify people. They are down through a couple of photos taken from exactly the same position but the objects moved slightly for each one to give the affect that they are moving them selves. I really like this affect and ch other. This is one of the manbe incorporating this idea into our music video.

Email to Audley End Miniature Railway

To whom it may concern,

My name is Ellie Smith and I am an A2 student at Newport Free Grammar School. I am studying media studies and part of the course is to make a music video. The song we have chosen for our video has alot to do with train stations, but with the image of our artist we would like to use a miniature railway station. Myself, Hannah Carter, Nadine Board and Jack Ball would like to ask your permission to film our video at your miniature railway station. We understand if this is not possible but if we could we would be very grateful.

Please email me your reply at: number1dudette@hotmail.co.uk

Thank you.

This is an email to audley end miniature railway asking there approval, tell me what you think of it.

Kate nash uses similar *random* conventions as our artist josie vanders, This can help because it gives us more of an idea as to what image our artist and genre fit in to. This research can show us other similar artists and their videos which will help us to find other conventions to use in our music video. Both artists have similar conventions with the use of random food images, and natural pictures of them at home makes them seem more down to earth and normal . The use of handwriting labels adds to the creativity of the website , by doing this the artist is showing their creativeness which again goes with their image.

i know this is a bit random! but i'm doing media for my a level, and this year we have to do music videos except we are not allowed to use signed artists anymore! We were having difficulty finding someone and then I remember I'd come to one of your gigs before and your musics really good and the sort of thing we wanted to go for! So I was wondering if you would mind us using one of your songs, probarbly faces going places, for our music video? That is if your unsigned still! But if you'd rather not thats absolutely fine :) I just thought it was worth asking! Good luck with your music, me and my sister are big fans :) xx
Jose Vanders September 19 at 12:49pm Report
yes yes of course!! that would be amaze, please show me when it's done! good luck with it :) x x

Our song Lyrics

Faces Going Places lyrics

There's so many people at the station waiting for a train
To take them on some long journey far far away
There's a boy with a smile thinking about Marie
'Cause he caught her in the shower last night accidentally
He caught her in the shower last night accidentally.

There's a woman with a baby trying to make it stop crying
So she's bribing with a lemon lollypop
There's a boy with a girlfriend, she's in way too far
'Cause I saw him looking at another womans heart
I saw him looking at another womans heart.

And people say that I'm just being lazy
I've got the dreams but don't know where to go
They think if I could choose to live here at the sation I would.

There's a man with a bald patch at the back of his head
His heart is getting sleepy and he's watching where he treads
A group of sweaty girls are standing in a line
Naivity exploding as he gives them all the eye,
Naivity exploding as he gives them all the eye.

There's a lady with a basket full of all her eggs
She's counted them too quickly, she'll wake up and they'll be dead
The boy whos lost his marbles has found them down the drain
The slit's too thin to get them so he'll have to start again
The slit's too thin to get them so he'll have to start again.

And people say that I'm just being lazy
I've got the dreams but don't know where to go
They think if I could choose to live here at the sation, to live hear at the station
Oh, you think if I could choose to live here at the station I would.
We have finally chosen our unsigned artist, Jose Vander's. Her music and image is very similar to artists such as -
  • Regina Spektor
  • Kate Nash
  • Laura Marling
All the artists are English and all write their own songs. Both Laura Marling and Regina Spektor play accoustic music and play an instrument, just like Jose Vanders who plays the piano. You find with these artists that their instruments are just as important as them and are played in most of their songs. Kate Nash is not really an accoustic artist but has a similar sound to Jose Vander's, both artists genre of music includes alternative and their lyrics tend to be a bit more random such as 'two little ladies sat eating their biscuits' - Jose Vanders, or 'I have a family and I drink cups of tea' - Kate Nash. Kate Nash is more mainstream which differs from Jose, but originally she was unsigned just like Jose is now and her music would of been alot more similar at that point. Kate Nash and Jose Vanders also have a similar image which tends to be old fashioned and individual, and they don't have the sex appeal of alot of young female artists today who wear tight clothes and have alot of flesh showing.

21st September

Today we had a break through. We have all agreed on an artist for our coursework.
Ellie had met a girl named Jose Vanders after she did a cover at a gig. She is unsigned, makes and sings her own songs, has a great voice and is really good at playing her own instruments (piano). Although we had originally said we wanted acoustic but we all agree that this is really good and just from listening to it once we have come up with a couple of ideas that we could incorperate into the music video.
'Faces Going Places' by Jose Vanders
The comments that people have made show us that this song is liked by a lot of people and would do quite well in the market if backed by good advertisement and a proper video. It also shows us that our artist has the "normal person" look. She is a normal girl, like everyone else. The kind of person you would see out on the street.

We could use the clapping at the beginning to switch the clips in time with. As there are different story lines we could switch between each of the characters and sotries as a way of introducing each one.
We could go random (as the artist appears to be) and have random people in the back ground clap when there is a clap.
We could have the main characters clap when the artist does and use that as a way to switch between clips. Maybe use it once or twice like a swip screen. When they clap it is a close up on the hands and we can swip to another shot as their hands go past.

Analysis on a music video
The fray –Over my head

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5Kcyd-MGnU

(Embedding disabled by request)

The video basically shows a switch between the band playing and artist singing to the artist when he was younger at school not fitting in but finding a passion for music. The genre for this music video would be indie rock. And the audience would be late teens plus. The conventions seen in this video are rhetorical and synchronise throughout the video with the cuts between the artist performing a warehouse type room, and a school boy. The video starts with an establishing shot of a school, then a jump cut inside the school to a school boy singing the lyrics, he shows his individuality through his costume, he has badges and a sweat band on his wrist, this shows how he is not part of the crowd and has a rebellious side as it isn’t part of the uniform, when it jumps to the artist playing the piano and singing he is making eye contact with the camera which the younger boy doesn’t do. The end of the video shows the artist in the hall way where the school boy was and then in the theatre where the band is seen playing and the school boy singing which can make the song seem as if it’s his singing about his childhood. A main feature in this music video is that the artist is playing the piano with a band this makes the music video fit in to the indie/rock genre, the rock element is seen through the artist clothing and the use of electric guitars , also the final scenes where the band is playing at a gig shows conventions of a rock gig with the 'wild' crowd .

When listening to the song and reading the lyrics my interpretation of the song is that he has lost a relationship with a girlfriend and is being forgotten about ‘As you lose the argument in a cable car’. But when reading about the meaning behind the song it has a slight different meaning. The song was originally written by the lead singer and pianist about him and his relationship with his brother, they drifted apart when his brother when to university. The song is easy to relate to for a wide audience of both genders this has helped to make the song more popular than just aiming at one gender.
History on Indie music and how it has influenced modern indie bands (also known as independent music)
The term Indie music is used to describe the independence of music from major commercial record labels. These labels are usually self representative. People who include themselves in the ‘Indie’ genre do everything themselves as in recording tracks, marketing their band and finding places to perform (i.e. local pubs). Indie groups usually do not like help of any big producers from Music Industry.
Indie Music can date back to the 1960′s when music was limited to just pop, rock and roll and a bit of R&B. This was the Hippie era where most of the song lyrics were inspired by peace, love, anti-war thoughts and freedom. This is when independent bands started to form, one of the first famous bands from the 60’s were a band called "Velvet Underground". Their most popular hit *Sunday morning*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cWzxJvgWc8
. This was the band was seen  as a real "Indie" band. Their were 4 people in the band and from very different back grounds. Reed was a songwriter for Pickwick Records, Cale was a classically trained musician. Reeds friend Sterling Morrisson from his university on guitar, and Moe tucker (Sterling Morrisson’s younger sisters friend) on drums. This band is seen as a major influence on modern day music even though their album had very poor sales . Every alternative piece of rock music, from punk to post-rock, can be traced back to The Velvet Underground & Nico . Their clothing in the youtube link can be seen as an influence on indie styles today. They have long un brushed hair which gives them the careless look indie artists have today.

In the picture he is also wearing a tight stripy top which can also be seen as a modern indie style. The music video is very natural and un staged, this is a very common feature in indie videos, it has been deliberately set out like this because they want the band to be portrayed as easy going and relaxed. Another common feature seen in this and other modern indie videos is the band playing their instruments. The velvet underground is seen to have been a major influence on changing music in to an art-rock revolution that changed the look and sound of pop culture. The change of music inspired the band R.E.M , Nirvana and U2 to form.

I got information from these websites to obtain my research :

Possible Artist

Although she is not the genre or type of artist we wanted to go for, I have seen her at a gig and she's really good. All her songs are her own and she is unsigned! Its only an idea but if we use her and this song we could have a lot of things to do for a music video and I think it would be easy to do, but its only an idea!

Here's the link for the song- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSB2nAmwOts&feature=related

Artist Profile

As a group we came up with an artist profile of our ideal artist based on our chosen genre which is indie rock. We originally wanted to do indie pop but as we researched into it we found what we could do was limited and we found it hard to find well known artists that came under that genre. Indie rock seemed to be more popular and we found a lot of artists that we knew of which came under that genre and would give us influence to the type of artist we wanted. For the artist profile we had to think of what their target audience, name, costume, props and body language would be. As we hadn't chosen our unsigned artist and still havn't it was slightly more difficult, so we had to focus on our chosen genre and think of the influences of that style were like.

Our Artist Profile
  • Body language- Chilled out, confident but not arrogant, down to earth, relatable 'off the street'
  • Target audience- 16 - 24 year olds, mix gender, ABC1
  • Costume- Skinny jeans (dark colour), neutral polo top or shirt, sunglasses (rayban style), plimpsoles or smarter shoes and messy hair 'bed head
  • Props- Guitar
  • Artist Name- The artists actual name, not a stage name or band name - more natural and again links to how we want our artist to be relatable
We looked briefly at Emily Garner as an artist

I know Emily Garner from a youth organisation, Army Cadet Force.
I heard her sing and found out that she has permission to use many songs as she sings proffesionally at resturaunts, bars and weddings.
I thought she would be perfect as she has a really nice voice, very pretty face and the striotypical version of a perfect body. She would be good as an artist, great for girls to look up to and envy and has a good sex appeal for the male audience. She is also really good as we were looking for an artist that would look like the kind of person you could see in the street, a "normal" person.
When I asked her in August she said that she would be more than happy to sing for us and would come over here whenever we needed her for filming.

However, the group decided that Emily was not a good choice as they didn't want songs that were popular.
Link to 'The Slums' Myspace page, we have been looking at 'You Know'

I got this group through a friend who goes to a music university and has some friends in a band.
I thought they were really good as their style of music is very easy to like, catchy and all their own stuff. They go to Uni in CVhelmsford so they would have been reasonably easy to film. They have already got one video, which is posted on Youtube and their Myspace page. This shows that they want to develope and market themselves - they want people to see them. this is a good thing for us as we would be able to use it as an incentive to them to let us film - get them another music video.

However, the group does not want to use them as they are a band and they want a single artist.
a link to a song a guy made up himself. Good as it is an acoustic which is what our group is looking for.

Can the rest of the group click on the link and leave a comment of what you think of this artist please.
I think he is good as it is his own stuff and he is a good artist. Have a look at the comments below his video.
We have each set ourselves a task to do over the weekend, in preparation for our next lesson.

  • Jack is researching more into an artist we can use
  • Hannah is making an audience profile
  • Ellie is looking at music videos that will be similar to how we want ours
  • Nadine is looking at the technical part of making a music video
